Petra is an ancient Nabataean city in southern Jordan located about 150 miles south of Amman and considered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the New 7 Wonders of the World. Petra was established around the 4th century BC as a popular trading hub consisting of incense, spices, perfumes, precious metals, pottery, textiles and various goods due to its prime location. Petra is often called the Rose City because of its rose-red sandstone color.
Arrving to Petra
Our journey today begins very early in the morning and will take us along a paved path from the Petra visitor center to the Siq. From there we will hike approximately 45 minutes through the 1.2km long Siq to the entrance of the ancient Nabataean city of Petra with our first look at The Treasury. We'll continue on a slow hike through the streets of Petra heading towards the Monastery trail followed by approximately a 40 minute hike which involves climbing 850 steps up the mountain to the Monastery for breathtaking aerial views of Petra. Expect to spend up to 3 hours minimum hiking in Petra, depending on your fitness level. It’s very important to hike according to your fitness level taking several breaks as needed and stay hydrated!
