Wadi Rum, also known as the Valley of the Moon is a 74,000 hectare property located in southern Jordan bordering Saudi Arabia and approximately 324 kilometers from Amman and approximately 60 kilometers from the city of Aqaba. Wadi Rum is an UNESCO-protected area with an almost Martian feel consisting of red and orange sand and iron-rich, erosion resistant sandstone mountains. Many movies depicting a dessert or alien like backdrop were filmed here such as Lawrence of Arabia, The Martian, live-action Aladdin, Dune, Transformers 2, Theeb, John Wick and Star Wars: Rogue One and Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker.
The drive to Wadi Rum is approximately 4 to 5 hours by car from Amman, 1.5 to 2 hours from Petra, and 3.5 to 4 hours from the Dead Sea. Majority of tourists usually fly into Queen Alia International airport in Amman and plan their visit to Wadi Rum according to their sight-seeing itinerary throughout Jordan.
Nomadic Bedouin tribes have made this protected nature reserve home for thousands of years after the Nabateans' decline. Today it boosts several options for luxury camping, jeep tours, hot air balloon rides, camel rides, hiking and climbing, stargazing and awesome sunrise and sunset views while experiencing the awesome Bedouin hospitality.
